The better route is "D" to "B". You might find traces of the old road, but it's very overgrown and completely gone in a lot of spots.

The dirt road going WSW towards 1N62 isn't as clear as shown. There are all kinds of unmarked junctions and side roads. You could do it if you were good with a map and a compass -- but there's a problem. It cuts right through the camp marked as Camp Osceola on the map. That camp is still there and is active. I don't think that would be appropriate which is why I entered from further north.

The East Barton Flats area is a maze of little roads and old dirt tracks. It's fun to explore but not straightforward.

HJHikin' Jimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01554269915148144573noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805100829126623437.post-9738661903004518992013-05-07T21:46:10.355-07:002013-05-07T21:46:10.355-07:00Hi Jim. I'm interested in doing a loop hike on the South Fork Trail and the Lost Creek Trail that avoids walking along highway 38 west of South Fork Campground. I'm thinking of something like this:

- South Fork Trail to the junction with the Lost Creek Trail.
- Lost Creek Trail to point "C" on your first map.
- Old road to point "B" and then point "A".
- Dirt road WSW to paved road marked 1N62.
- 1N62 to Jenks Lake Road.
- Jenks Lake Road to South Fork Trailhead.

A couple of questions on this:

- Does the old road connect points "B" and "C"?
- Would one direction on this loop be easier than the other?
- What's your estimate of the mileage on this loop?

Thanks,

Tom

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14404995389237704484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805100829126623437.post-26459790142365562872013-05-01T13:14:02.667-07:002013-05-01T13:14:02.667-07:00Hi, Andy,

Water should be plentiful in Fish Creek and the S. Fork of the Santa Ana River. Water should also be available at Lodgepole Spring. If you want to do it as a two nighter, you can stay the first night at Fish Creek Camp and the Second at Grinnell Ridge Camp. If you want to do it as a one nighter, then maybe stay at Lodgepole Spring.

HJHikin' Jimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01554269915148144573noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805100829126623437.post-48885937594122669492013-05-01T11:35:49.818-07:002013-05-01T11:35:49.818-07:00Great write up Jim. I'd imagine this would be a good choice in the fall passing through the Aspen Grove area.
As always, thanks for taking the time to share your experiences.Andyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06986120777912079835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805100829126623437.post-60818498052390510102013-05-01T09:21:14.168-07:002013-05-01T09:21:14.168-07:00Hi, Runnersmania,

It's clear and well graded, and usually I see no one except the people I'm with. There is no water along the route unless you know about the spring in my post or if you go all the way to the S. Fork of the Santa Ana River. My cross country short cut might be less attractive to a runner, yes?

HJHikin' Jimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01554269915148144573noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805100829126623437.post-23857851570482439182013-05-01T08:06:17.220-07:002013-05-01T08:06:17.220-07:00Thanks for the report, Jim!
